That's a dog. It's from Link's Awekening/Link's (GB) Awekening DX (GBC). When you hit those dogs, they jump on you, causing 1/2 heart damage.

Nothing happens if you stab them a lot. They will just finish to kill you. But... if you want to play chicken dodge, stab a chicken about 30 times, and it will summon lots of other chickens that will fly and ram into you, pecking your eyes out of yar face. Try dodging those. Everytime you get hit, you lose 1 full heart.

Blue chicken boomerang attack trick : Get the blue chicken and the boomerang. Then toss the boomerang, then grab the chicken before the boomerang comes back to you. The boomerang will hover under you, and all that is touched by the boomerang takes damage, without you taking the damage of enemy attacks!

Yeah, Link's Awakening was the only Zelda game I played, and not beaten. (EXCLUDING Adventure of Link)

Adventure of Link is friggin hard!
