| No. Roms are illegal even if you own the game (seriously). Emulators are perfectly legal though. | ||||||

| If you have a website, never EVER post rhe ROMs on your site. If you do, you could go to prison, or their rightful owners will sue you. | ||||||

| Eeech, why do SOOOOOO many sites have them then? I only ever had ROMs that I own(I do it for save files that DON'T restart). Also any I don't own, I keep for less that 24 hours, however if I didn't beat it, download it again a day later. I'm just that skilled in beating games fast. | ||||||

| *Looks around* What? Why are you all staring at me!!!! *Sees the completely empty space of nothingness around him* ...Uh.... Anyways... Maybe I do have SOME.... Uhh... Lots..... >.> But! I only get them for games that you can't buy anymore! Those stupid game stores try to get off selling Chrono Trigger for 70 bucks! Screw them! Anyways, I've got quite a bit of NES ROMS, because... Their small... And.... Those games are hard to find! Plus, I rip sprites from them to use in comics, and for custom spriting!!! Anyways, no... Their aren't allow, no matter what. That 24 hour thing is bull, no matter how many people say it is true! I believe that it is morally okay to have ROMs for games that aren't sold anymore... As you aren't really ripping off anybody! (Well, except for those Nazi game stores, with their SNES game monopoly! Screw them!) Heh, got a little bit carried away there... But seriously! Whats the harm for stuff that isn't sold anymore?!?!? *Looks and sees several police officers at the door* Uh-oh! Got some deleting to do!!! Heh, not really.. But I'm gonna delete ones that I don't need! Like, Donkey Kong 3 (NES) Seriously! That game sucks! Its like a Game and Watch game, but... Lame! Whee for Mr. Game and Watch of Super Smash Brothers Melee!! (Even though I never play him) So, no posting them on your site! Ever! Just... Keep them secret... Keep it safe... >.< Okay, that was stolen from Lord of The Rings a bit! Bug bugger off! I can't wait for the last one!!! WhooooooOOooooOOo! Hmm, done rambling now! Gone deleting! Farewell! ~Shadic (Weee! (Or, as the Dutch say, "Veeee!") >.<) PS Okay, I was a little tired while posting this here thing! Go away! | ||||||

| ..........Wow Shadic........ Rom's are illegal, and so much so that most forums forbid anyone for even asking for Roms. I've seen huge fits thrown at people for even mentioning the dreaded name Rom and asking if they were even legal on "their" forum. | ||||||

| ROM's are only copyrighted in America and Japan (and probably a few other major gaming countries). It costs them money to copyright something and it's very hard to actually get something copyrighted throughout the world. So many ROM sites/hosts/owners are from other countries where the copyrights don't mean a thing, and Nintendo (or whoever) can't do a thing about it. Other sites like Vimm's Lair only really have ROM's for those companies that are no longer around anymore, or haven't ask/threatened that they remove it from their site. Also, it usually costs a company money to take legal action against someone. So it wouldn't always be worth it to them to sue/fight over ROM's of long dead games. | ||||||

| I only get GB, some GBC, NES and SNES ROMs, I don't bother with GBA(yet). I see nothing wrong with playing any of those ROMs, it's the only way and it doesn't do anything against Nintendo! I hate those stores though, that are packed with SNES games for sale. I went to a Wal-Mart, it has 45 copies of F-Zero there. And a K-Mart(This was a while ago) had about 100 copies of Battletoads/Double Dragon(That's a good game), and a general store in the States, has about 30 copies of Bonkers, this old old game. How and why do they have all these games? | ||||||

| What's the difference between roms and emulators? Only experiance I have is that a friend of a friend has a Dreamcast disk with virtually every NES game on it. He had the same thing for Atari, too, though I think that one might've been put out by Atari. It looked a lot more cleaned up. And those stores would have all those games because they bought too many when they were new and just couldn't sell 'em, most likely. | ||||||

| A ROM is a read-only-memory. It's a chip where programs are stored. And an emulator is a program that runs the data of the ROM. The reason it's called an emulator is because it emulates the original console. | ||||||

| I remember my Genesis once got kicked by me, and the screen went all binary and it said EMULATION TERMINATED, PLEASE SELECT A BINARY TO RESET SYSTEM AND ROM MEMORY, and it shown about 2 million 8 digit codes, all with characters up to FF from 00. Odd though, binary is 1010010110 or something I had thought, and ROM Memory=Read-only Memory Memory, so I just hit reset, screw finding the right code! | ||||||

| That would be hexadecimal (hex = 6, decimal = 10, hexadecimal = 16, 0-9/A-F). It's a 16 base number system (binary is a 2 base). You can convert 1 into the other and back again without any problems. Computers are in binary because 1 means a circuit is on, 0 means a circuit is off. So basically it's not really numbers, but just on/off switches. RAM (random access memory) basically stores an electrical pattern of switches, which is why anything in your RAM is lost when you turn off your computer (no more electric to keep running through it). ROM (read only memory) is similar to ram, but the switches are fused to the chip so they can't be changed or lost when the computer turns off. A video game ROM you play with an emulator technically shouldn't be called a ROM, but is anyway because it's a copy of a ROM as a RAM file. Bonus Info! A hard drive works by rotating carbon fibers north/south or south/north depending on their magnetism which is why magnets damage a hard drive (among other things that work the same way). You're reordering the fibers a way the computer can't read. | ||||||
