Can anyone here seperate music into genres? That's one thing I've never been able to understand. Some things are very obvious (lots of rap, lots of country), but then some things are hard (wtf is emo?). I have a friend who's crazy about it (Slipknot has to be nu-metal, not metal), but she's never been able to help me with it all.

Well, the line has become very blured between typed of music. Some songs are painfully obvious. Some of them the singers say that its not pop or country or whatever...but it obviously is, no matter what they say. So there you have pop, country, tecno, euro, rock(which encompases all eras, because every couple of years rock changes), rap, new, jazz, religious, and a couple more I can't think of at the moment.

Then after you see all the obvious ones, you have the "cross overs". The ones that are a little of two or maybe even three typed of music. The most obvious that I have seen is country music sounding like rock (pick a decade, I've heard it all) or jazz sounding like rock, (again, most any decade, though 80's butt rock seems to be a favorite) those ones really can't be put into a catagory of just one.

THEN you have the stuff thats just odd, that you really can't put anywhere. I just call that the extra stuff. Some of it's good, some of it's bad.

This is just MY personal opinion of music genres. Made the most sence to me.:)

(later, after reading over the post)
please ignore all the spelling mistakes. I was less than half awake when I wrote this. Thanks:)

I don't think 'rock' is a genre any more. Nearly anything could fall into it, and there's nothing that defines it. Anything that's in 'rock' could fall into another category. Only exception I'd make to this would be to say that you could take what rock used to be and say that it's '80's rock' or '70's rock.' But otherwise, nah, put it someplace else.

To add to the genres: ska, punk, metal, grunge, emo, latino (Is it a genre?), and folk music.

I think that over the course of time, nearly every band falls into more than one category. You can look at the Ramones, who released an album where no two songs fit the same genre. One of my favorite bands, the Barenaked Ladies, did something very similar with their latest CD, 'Everything to Everyone.' There's country, pop, rock, techno, something like salsa music, just... everything to everyone. :D

Does anyone know what these are? Reggae, bluegrass, bubblegum... er... there were some more, but I'm fairly tired right now and can't think. Really odd names.

hm. Well I guess i like rock and... Ambient music(is that a genere even?). Techno is very catchy. I dispise rap, but there are one or two songs i like from it. In fact, I bet everyone could find at least one song they like from each genere.
